“That deaf, dumb & blind kid sure plays a mean pinball”

The Whitley Bay Film Festival presents “Tommy with special guest Roger Daltrey”

The Whitley Bay Film festival kick off it’s sixth year of movie, culture, music and arts events with a very special 40th anniversary screening of Ken Russell’s classic film.  Tommy himself, Roger Daltrey, will be in attendance for a conversation with music historian Chris Phipps and a question and answer session with the audience. The evening will be introduced by festival patron Ian La Frenais.

Lavishly directed by Russell, Tommy is a darkly psychological kaleidoscopic ride through 1970s culture. It features a star encrusted cast of acting and musical royalty including Oliver Reed, Jack Nicholson, Elton John and The Who themselves to name but a few.  The music is based on a reworking of the band’s classic 1969 rock opera.  Set in a seaside town, it features Roger Daltrey as the hero who escapes adversity by salvation through skill at the pinball table.

As a precursor to the event, the festival team are launching a month long pinball tournament throughout July culminating in the final which will be held at Playhouse Whitley Bay, prior to the film screening. We are seeking to find the north east’s own pinball wizard!

Tickets for the Tommy 40th anniversary are available directly from the Playhouse, Whitley Bay.  Please see the festival website for further details of this event and other festival happenings, The Pinball tournament or Teenage Cancer Trust benefit:  www.whitleybayfilmfestival.co.uk &  www.tyneidols.com.
